Light & Colour – July 2025

with Jonathan Vaines – 10th, 17th & 24th July 2025 – 4pm until 5pm (uk)

In this series of online classes, we will approach images with a view to the light within it and controlling the colour.

Evaluation of light is essential when planning how to process an image and having the ability to move that light makes post processing easy. Simple light movements makes all the difference to the impact of an image.

Colour can be lost at the time of image capture, or so it seems. Often the colour is recorded but not seen however in lost cases it can be lifted from a RAW file. When moving light in an image the colour is moved too so knowing how to control that shift is important.

These two elements work hand in hand and gaining control of them individually open a new route to processing your images.

This online class delivered by Zoom over 3 weeks covers control of images in general photography, but we will also cover creative work to move light and colour from one image to another.

We will cover:

  • Adobes most powerful adjustment – levels and curves. Gain full control of them by working with colours, output adjustment and blend modes.
  • The multiple ways to control Colour within Adobe Camera RAW including correct white balancing, hue, saturation and luminance controls, split tone and point colour control.
  • Grading images with colour to produce dramatic effects within images
  • Changing colours with blend modes & channel mixing
  • Control subtle changes within colour with selective colour adjustments
  • Shifting light from one image to another
  • Balancing colours within separate files

This online class is limited to 30 students to allow plenty of time for questions and personal help from Jonathan.

  • How to control the colour you have in an image
  • Make light adjustments to give images impact
  • How to work with colour channels to create false colour adding drama into your work
  • How to blend in elements within a composite by using light and colour from another image
  • Make colour changes selectively
  • How to control colour based on the brightness of your image and add colours selectively to improve your photograph presentation
