Perfect Printing – August 2025

with Jonathan Vaines – 13th & 20th August 2025 at 7pm (uk) / 2pm (est)

Are you a photographer that want to take full control of your image making?

Do you print but just don’t get those colours, brightness and sharpness as you really want it?

This Perfect Printing class will give you the knowledge to print your images as you see them on your computer.

Each 90 minute class delivered via Zoom is designed for photographers that want to home print. We will cover:

  • Taking control of your printer by installing the manufacturers print driver
  • Understand the ICC print profile – what do they do and how important are they
  • Final preparations of an image for print in Photoshop and understand why it is different to a projected image
  • Outputting an image using a print module and the importance of output sharpening
  • Understand Paper choices and how to make them.

This online class is limited to 30 students to allow plenty of time for questions and personal help from Jonathan.

Where to access full control of your printer by removing control from your Windows or Mac driver. Ensuring your driver is current and correct for the paper you are using.

What an ICC profile is and the difference between a bespoke profile and a generic profile. How to load profiles and back them up.

How to make final adjustments to an image with Gamma adjustments and understand Out of Gamut colours

The importance of output sharpening and methods to do this with Photoshop and a dedicated output print module.

The technical jargon of paper. What Optical Brighteners do, what is cellulose and cotton paper and why is base colour of a paper important. We will also discuss matching images to paper and what benefits archival ink and paper are.

As someone who only recently decided to delve into the world of home printing I found the class exceptionally useful.

In particular I am now a keen user of QImage which was clearly identified during the course as a great way to produce excellent prints.

I also return to view the class to help me understand the best way of producing very acceptable images

I recently attended the Perfect Printing class and over the lessons I learnt so much in respect of the preparation of prints for printing, the actual choice of paper and what ICC profiles are and how to use them.

I used to think printing was a dark art. It still is but the class threw a lot of light on to it and I feel more confident about printing my images. Even to the extent of entering prints into club competitions.

I enjoyed the recent Perfect Printing class very much.

I did have a basic understanding of getting out of my printer what I was seeing on my screen but this class helped me better understand that.

Also found it useful as regards the different types of paper to use. I already have Permajet as my ‘go to’ paper but Jonathan’s extra information regarding paper types etc was very useful. One thing that was new to me was about ‘output sharpening’ which i am looking into on the helpful replay videos which come with this class.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class from start to finish. I really appreciated the attention to every minute detail in the preparation of images for print, and in the actual process of setting it up in Qimage.

It was great to have the reasons for every setting explained and I now feel competent in achieving the desired tone, without numerous practise runs!

I also really appreciated the concise explanation for the choice of papers, and the discount code was an added bonus!

I enrolled for this class because I am thinking of progressing from PDI to print competitions at local club level, and I found it both good value, and informative, offering reasons and solutions to known home printing issues.

Really enjoyed the printing class from Jonathan which was very informative.

We went on to use the recommendation of Q print which was so  much easier to use than  the software we were using.

PLUS always check your printing on the right side of the paper!

The Perfect Printing class was just fantastic. Jonathan went through his processes very slowly and concisely for us which was great for me – one of the hard of understanding!

I learnt a lot from this class as many other speakers speed through things and even on replay it’s still hard to keep up with them. This was the best value for money I have ever spent on a class and I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to improve their printing.

As a judge would say, Jonathan’s got a 20 out of 20.

Image taken, processed in your favourite editing software, now the final stage to print out your image.  However thats not what was expected! Why..?

Well perhaps the best way to resolve this issue is to join Johnathan Vaines on his journey through “Perfect Printing” presentation.  Use of Zoom offers an alternative to an in person workshop. Johnathan is highly regarded as a teacher, presenter as well as a creative photographer.

All aspects of the printing process from start to finish are covered in easily digested sections. Printer set up, printer profiling, monitor versus printer colour spaces, characteristics of printing paper, suitability for subject choices,  and perhaps most importantly the print saving process to facilitate repeated printing with no changes!
You also benefit from the presentation being available for 12 months enabling you to dip in and out as necessary when needs arise.

I usually put budget photo paper in a low budget printer and wonder why I am not getting good prints!

Having taken this class I understand what I need to do to get my prints more consistent.

Part of the class explains how to prepare your prints for printing, and for who currently who send prints to a lab or make photo-books it is very useful.

I was really looking forward to this class as I had so many issues with my printing, which paper to use for different genre and why prints were too dark also my main problem was colour cast, it had been so frustrating.

I really enjoyed the class, doing thing so differently now, so fingers crossed I will be getting top marks at club competitions.
