Textures – Working Creatively – October 2025

with Jonathan Vaines – 29th October, 5th & 12th November 2025 at 10am (uk) / 6am (est)

Adding textures can give an artistic feel to your work.

It provides you with the ability to make your images individual and helps when developing a personal style. They can be used to give a painterly look and help blend elements of images when making composites.

In these three online classes (1 hour each) you will learn how to apply textures using a number of blend modes.

How to create new textures from blending your own work. Use textures to give depth to pictures and we will create a composite image from using blend modes and compound blending.

This online class is limited to 30 students to allow plenty of time for questions and personal help from Jonathan.

This online class delivered by Zoom over 3 weeks (each class lasts 1 hour) is designed for photographers that want to work with textures to make creative composites. We will cover:

  • How to make your own textures
  • What makes a good texture
  • How to process textures ready for use in Photoshop
  • How to store / file textures
  • How to apply textures using blend modes
  • Giving images depth with texture
  • How to control texture layers and work with partial selected textures (Blend IF)
  • Controlling masks independently to texture layers
  • Adding colour to texture layers
  • Building a creative composite image using a start file and texture layers

I very much enjoyed the class with Jonathan which covered exactly what I wanted to learn about using textures to improve my images.

Jonathan’s approach is very clear, he shows and explains how to do something in Photoshop and the effects it has.

I particularly appreciated the use of Transform, how to create and use brushes and the approach of using multiple “thin” layers of texture.

Thank you for the textures class. I have learnt a great deal. Although I already understood textures and have used them in the past, your class taught me many things and techniques I did not know and can now incorporate into my work.

I liked seeing the work that the students had submitted in the secret space area of the site. It extended the value I got from the class to see the creativity of other people.

I am going to replay the classes and appreciate that I can watch the recordings for 12 months

I had seen this technique demonstrated on a previous session and keen to learn more.

Again well explained, and I started to think about some of my images more creatively, something that does not come naturally.

You are shown how you can transform something that looks very ordinary through the use of textures.

In addition for anybody who has been on the Photoshop for Photographers class, there are reminders of some of the features taught on that class.

I’m amazed how adding a texture which could be anything from clouds, cracked brickwork, paving slaps, bottom of roasting pan, fabric, wallpaper, pages from an old book or you can even make your own using brushes.

Its endless it can change your images into a work of art especially using blend modes.

Jonathan is an excellent teacher, he explains things in detail and his method of teaching is easy to understand.

I would definitely recommend this class plus its really useful to have the recording for a year. Thanks PhotoClub247!
